The San Francisco Giants and Matt Chapman have discussed an extension to keep the third baseman in the Bay Area.

"We've had conversations. We've had active dialogue," Chapman's agent Scott Boras said Friday, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Chapman, who can become a free agent in the offseason, said last week that he was "waiting" on a new deal and that the Giants knew he wanted to remain with the team.

The 31-year-old has a $17-million player option for the 2025 campaign as part of the one-year, $18-million contract he signed with the Giants in March.

"Obviously, they have interest, so we let them know that Matt plays well in San Francisco, plays well in the Bay Area, and having seasons like he did in 2018-19 (with the Oakland Athletics) and this year - it's a good environment for him," Boras said. "Certainly, we are interested in listening to what they have to say."

Chapman is enjoying a strong season at the plate and in the field in 2024. He entered play Friday with a 119 wRC+, 20 home runs, 85 runs scored, and 4.2 fWAR. He hasn't eclipsed 4.0 fWAR since registering 5.5 with the Athletics in 2019.
