Burnes: I've heard 'nothing' from Brewers about extension

Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes said he's yet to have any discussions with the team about a long-term extension despite being open to talks.

The reigning National League Cy Young winner told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com that the only talks he or his agency had with the team last winter were regarding one-year deals to avoid arbitration.

"You would think maybe there would have been some initial talks last offseason, but nothing," he said Sunday.

Burnes, 27, has followed up last year's award-winning campaign with another stellar season. He leads the National League with 214 strikeouts and ranks top 10 in ERA, FIP, and WHIP in a career-high 172 innings pitched. The two-time All-Star has two years of arbitration eligibility left before free agency.

While there's no indication the Brewers have been looking to trade their ace, it's unclear what route they'll take in the winter. Milwaukee shocked the baseball world by trading All-Star relief ace Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres ahead of this year's deadline while it was in first place.

Burnes is one of the last homegrown players standing from the Brewers team that came one game short of a pennant in 2018. He's also one of several arbitration-eligible Brewers whose salary should rise significantly this winter while moving one year closer to free agency.

"For anyone who isn't on a long-term deal, once you get into your later years of arbitration, anything can happen," Burnes said. "We saw it with Hader. We might see it this offseason. I don't know what route the front office is going to take. ... You hope to be in one jersey your entire career. But there's other things that go into that."

He added, "Maybe next year is the last year. Maybe we get two more years. We don’t really know. It’s hard to look at it like that, but you don’t know what’s going to happen."
