Blue Jays' Ryu undergoes Tommy John surgery, out 12-18 months

Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu underwent Tommy John surgery and is expected to be out for the next 12-to-18 months, the team announced Saturday, according to Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith.

The 35-year-old had a revision UCL reconstruction with a flexor tendon repair, according to MLB.com's Keegan Matheson.

Ryu is in the third season of a four-year, $80-million contract he signed before the 2020 campaign.

The veteran hurler finishes the 2022 campaign with a 2-0 record, a 5.67 ERA, and just 5.33 K/9 across 27 innings.

Ryu was a finalist for the American League Cy Young Award in his first season with the Blue Jays. Over 49 starts in Toronto, he owns a 21-12 record with a 4.07 ERA and 231 strikeouts in 263 innings.
