5-time All-Star Adrian Gonzalez retires

Five-time All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez announced his retirement Saturday after 15 MLB seasons.

The 39-year-old hadn't appeared in a major-league game since playing 54 contests with the New York Mets in 2018.

Gonzalez began his career with stops in the then-Florida Marlins organization and a two-year stint with the Texas Rangers.

It wasn't until a trade to his hometown San Diego Padres before the 2006 season that Gonzalez's career took off.

He made three National League All-Star appearances in five seasons with the Padres and ranks top 10 in franchise history in batting average (.288), hits (856), home runs (161), runs scored (464), and RBIs (501).

San Diego dealt Gonzalez to the Boston Red Sox following the 2010 campaign as part of a package that brought back Anthony Rizzo.

Despite inking a seven-year, $154-million contract extension with Boston before the 2011 season, Gonzalez spent less than two years with the Red Sox before he was on the move again.

The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, and Josh Beckett in a massive deal with Boston in August 2012.

Gonzalez continued to produce for Los Angeles, helping the Dodgers remain consistent playoff contenders in his six seasons with the club before they released him in 2017.

The sweet-swinging first baseman finishes his career hitting .287/.358/.485 with 317 homers, 437 doubles, and 1,202 RBIs in 1,929 games.
