Former All-Star Game MVP Melky Cabrera retires
The "Melk Man" has made his final delivery in Major League Baseball.
Melky Cabrera is retiring after a 15-year career that included a World Series ring in 2009 and an All-Star Game MVP in 2012. The announcement was made via Cabrera's Instagram account, according to MLB insider Hector Gomez.
The 37-year-old was a free agent and last appeared in the majors in 2019 for the Pittsburgh Pirates where he hit .280/.313/.399 with seven homers in 133 games.
Cabrera began his career in 2005 with the New York Yankees, helping the team to a championship in '09.
New York traded Cabrera to the Atlanta Braves where he spent the 2010 season before inking a contract with the Kansas City Royals.
Kansas City flipped Cabrera to the San Francisco Giants before the 2012 campaign. He then authored the finest season of his career before getting slapped with a 50-game suspension after using a banned substance.
Despite the suspension, the one-time All-Star secured a two-year contract from the Toronto Blue Jays before stints with the Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals, Cleveland, and the Pirates.
Cabrera finishes his big-league career hitting .285/.334/.417 with 144 homers in 1,887 games.
