The Boston Red Sox were apparently trying to upgrade their infield before the lockout began.

Boston had interest in free-agent shortstop Trevor Story and checked in with his representatives, Jon Heyman of the Big Time Baseball podcast reported.

Story's powerful right-handed bat would play well at Fenway Park; whether he'd fit at shortstop in Boston is another story. The Red Sox already have All-Star Xander Bogaerts at short, meaning one of them would likely have to slide over to second base if Story came aboard.

Story is coming off a down year with the Colorado Rockies, as he posted a .801 OPS with 24 homers in 142 games. But he's been a consistent 30-30 threat over the course of his career, winning a pair of Silver Sluggers and earning two All-Star berths in six big-league campaigns.

Including Boston, there are at least three teams that are seriously involved in the Story sweepstakes, according to Heyman. The Seattle Mariners were said to be showing interest in him as a third baseman before the lockout, while the Rockies also reportedly want to re-sign the 28-year-old.

Story, like all free agents, isn't allowed to speak with teams or sign his next contract until the lockout ends.
