Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler will start Tuesday's Game 4 on short rest, the team announced.

Buehler's first career start on short rest comes in an elimination contest with the Dodgers' season on the line. The San Francisco Giants lead the best-of-five NLDS 2-1 after a narrow victory in L.A. on Monday.

The two-time All-Star threw 99 pitches over 6 1/3 innings in a Game 1 loss Friday. Manager Dave Roberts said Buehler approached him about possibly starting Game 4 shortly after his last outing.

"Walker actually brought it up to us," Roberts said, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. "Once he came to us today and said he felt good, it was a no-brainer."

Buehler, a Cy Young contender after posting a 2.47 ERA over 33 starts during the regular season, will pitch against the Giants for the eighth time in 2021.

With Buehler starting on Tuesday, left-hander Julio Urias - who started and won Game 2 of this series - would get the ball in a potential Game 5 on Thursday, Roberts added, per The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya. That means Urias will not be available out of the bullpen during Tuesday's contest.
