Major League Baseball suspended Washington Nationals left-hander Sean Nolin five games for intentionally hitting Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, the league announced Friday.

Nolin initially appealed the suspension but dropped it and began serving the ban Friday, according to MASN's Mark Zuckerman.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez also received a one-game suspension as a result of the incident, as well as an undisclosed fine. He'll serve his ban Friday.

Nolin hit Freeman in the first inning of his start at Truist Park on Wednesday. After missing with his first pitch, he plunked the reigning NL MVP with his second offering, leading to the quick ejection.

The incident came barely 24 hours after Atlanta's Will Smith hit Nationals superstar Juan Soto near the end of Tuesday's game between the NL East rivals.

Nolin, 31, owns a 5.60 ERA in five starts for the Nationals this season.
