Kluber throws Yankees' 1st no-hitter since Cone's perfecto in 1999
Corey Kluber is the first New York Yankees pitcher to throw a no-hitter since David Cone's perfect game against the Montreal Expos on July 18, 1999.
The Yankees right-hander limited the Texas Rangers to a single walk while striking out nine on 101 pitches in Major League Baseball's sixth no-hitter of 2021.
It's the 11th regular-season no-hitter in Yankees history and 12th overall including Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series.
The 35-year-old Kluber signed a one-year, $11-million contract with the Yankees this past offseason after missing most of 2020 due to a shoulder injury with the Rangers. He was limited to just one inning with Texas in his lone year with the club.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner hadn't thrown a complete game since 2018 as a member of the Cleveland Indians.
Catcher Kyle Higashioka was thrilled to be part of Kluber's historic night.
"It was almost like what you would imagine the feeling after winning the World Series would be like," Higashioka said postgame, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. "It was a crazy, euphoric feeling."
This is the second time this season the Rangers have been no-hit after also falling to San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove. It comes one day after Detroit Tigers right-hander Spencer Turnbull tossed a no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners.
Despite there already being six such performances this season, the Rangers, Mariners, and Indians have each been the losing team twice. It's the first time in MLB history that three teams have fallen in multiple no-nos in the same season.
The most no-hitters thrown in a single season during the modern era is seven, which happened in 1990, 1991, and 2015.
