The Oakland Athletics, Houston Astros, and Texas Rangers have checked in with the Boston Red Sox about a potential trade for outfielder Andrew Benintendi, a source told Sean McAdam of the Boston Sports Journal.

However, the Rangers aren't involved and a different American League team has engaged in deeper trade talks with Boston, a source told Rob Bradford of WEEI.

In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals have also expressed interest in Benintendi, a second source told McAdam.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are reportedly also seen as a possible destination due to Ben Cherington's presence in Pittsburgh's front office. The Pirates GM served as executive vice president and GM for the Red Sox from 2011-15.

A trade for Benintendi could come soon, but it won't be with the Miami Marlins, who were previously reported to be in discussions for the 26-year-old, McAdam adds.

The No. 7 pick in the 2015 draft has seen his name emerge in trade rumors over the last several days, and the Red Sox are apparently targeting pitching and outfield prospects in return.

Benintendi struggled at the plate in the shortened 2020 season, hitting .103 with one extra-base hit in 14 games. His best stretch came between 2017 and 2018 when he slashed .280/.359/.444 with 36 home runs and 41 steals over 299 contests.
