The Chicago White Sox interviewed Tony La Russa for their managerial vacancy and there are rumblings it's already his job to lose.

However, if his friend Dennis Eckersley has any read on the situation, La Russa won't be named the 41st skipper of the South Siders.

"My gut tells me, 'no,'" Eckersley said about the possibility of La Russa taking the gig, adding that he spoke with the 76-year-old earlier Thursday. "That's the only situation he would go to, though. Because he has such a great relationship with (White Sox owner Jerry) Reinsdorf.

"But it doesn't make any sense, does it? I mean. It just doesn't. But if Tony wants to do it, he's going to do it. And my gut tells me he won't. Or they won't. One or the other."

La Russa currently works in the Los Angeles Angels' front office as a senior advisor of baseball operations. The Hall of Famer last managed in 2011, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a World Series championship. With 33 years of managerial experience, La Russa sits third on the all-time wins list with 2,728, behind John McGraw (2,763) and Connie Mack (3,731).

If hired, La Russa would immediately become the oldest current manager in the sport, beating 71-year-old Houston Astros skipper Dusty Baker.
