The New York Yankees shelled Cleveland Indians ace Shane Bieber in his playoff debut.

New York roughed up Bieber - the favorite to win the AL Cy Young Award - for seven runs over 4 2/3 innings in Game 1 of their wild-card series at Progressive Field on Tuesday.

It was Bieber's shortest start of the 2020 season.

Bieber, who led the majors in wins, ERA, strikeouts, FIP, and WHIP during the regular season, did not allow more than three earned runs in any of his 12 starts this summer. He gave up only 14 earned runs all year.

The seven runs also tied his career high, according to Sarah Langs of

The Yankees jumped on Bieber right away, as Aaron Judge launched his fourth pitch of the game for a long two-run home run:

Gleyber Torres then chased Bieber with a two-run homer in the fifth that put New York ahead 7-2. Phil Maton took over on the mound.

Bieber left after allowing seven runs on nine hits. The 25-year-old struck out seven and walked two on 105 pitches.
