Longtime infielder Jose Reyes announced his retirement from Major League Baseball on Wednesday.

The four-time All-Star played 16 seasons from 2003-18. He had stints with the New York Mets, Miami Marlins, Toronto Blue Jays, and Colorado Rockies.

Reyes, 37, is perhaps best remembered for his first tenure with the Mets. From 2003-11, he hit 292/.341/.441 in 1,050 games as New York's starting shortstop and won the batting title in 2011. He also stole 370 bases over that span, leading the majors in that category in 2006 and 2007. He's the Mets' all-time leader in steals (408) and triples (113).

"Mets fans, what can I say? We never got the ring we hoped we would get, but I can't imagine playing in front of any better fans in the whole world," Reyes said in a statement. "Your passion and energy always lifted me higher, and for that, I will always be grateful. I want to thank the fans in Miami and Toronto, too, as well as all my fans around the world."

Reyes signed a six-year contract with the Marlins prior to the 2012 season but spent just one year with the club before being traded to the Blue Jays in a 12-player deal. After slashing .289/.334/.404 in two-and-a-half years in Toronto, Reyes was sent to the Rockies as part of the trade for Troy Tulowitzki.

Following a 51-game suspension in 2016 for violating the league's domestic violence policy, Colorado designated Reyes for assignment. He then returned to the Mets and played his last three seasons as a utility infielder.
