Fernando Tatis Jr.'s impressive rookie season could earn him a hefty new contract.

The San Diego Padres plan to talk with the dynamic shortstop about a long-term extension, sources told Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

San Diego is considering a deal of six years or more to eliminate Tatis' arbitration seasons and first few years of free agency, according to Acee.

The 20-year-old hit 22 home runs and stole 16 bases to go with a .969 OPS in 84 games before suffering a season-ending back injury in August. He finished third in National League Rookie of the Year voting.
