Giants relocating bullpens from foul territory

A new manager isn't the only change coming to the San Francisco Giants in 2020.

In a long-anticipated move, the Giants are moving both the home and visiting bullpens at Oracle Park from the left- and right-field foul lines to behind the outfield fences, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.

A sneak peek of the renovations was captured this week when the stadium played host to a golf event:

Oracle Park's bullpens were built into the field of play as part of its retro style, despite the stadium's limited foul territory.

Calls for the Giants to relocate the bullpens became louder over the past few seasons when the mounds were the cause of multiple injuries. Perhaps most notably, Giants outfielder Mac Williamson missed several months in 2018 with a concussion after tripping over the mound in left field.

The renovation leaves just two active ballparks - Tampa Bay's Tropicana Field and Oakland's RingCentral Coliseum - with on-field bullpens. The Chicago Cubs moved Wrigley Field's bullpens from foul territory to underneath the bleachers in 2017.

Oracle's other famous feature, the deep right-center field known as "Triples Alley," will remain in place following the renovations. However, its outfield wall - currently 421 feet from home plate - will be moved in by four-to-six feet to accommodate the new bullpens, Schulman reports. Approximately 400 seats are also being removed during the revamping.

There are no other changes planned.
