Cervelli to reportedly join Braves following release from Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates requested unconditional release waivers for veteran catcher Francisco Cervelli on Thursday, the team announced.

Shortly thereafter, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Cervelli has agreed to a deal with the Atlanta Braves.

Nothing can be finalized yet, as Cervelli needs to clear release waivers - a process which takes 48 hours - without being claimed by any other team. If another club claims Cervelli, it will be on the hook for the remainder of his $11.5-million salary for 2019.

Cervelli has not appeared in a game since suffering a concussion May 25.

"Out of respect and appreciation for Francisco, we have chosen to honor his request to be released in order for him to pursue an opportunity that potentially gives him a chance at more playing time, as well as an opportunity this season to compete in the postseason," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said in a statement.

The 33-year-old was sent for a rehab assignment earlier in August but had yet to return to the majors. He's been placed on the injured list due to concussions or concussion symptoms eight different times dating back to 2011.

Earlier this season, Cervelli seemed to indicate a desire to move on from his duties behind the dish due to his injury history. The veteran backstop was quick to walk back those sentiments, however, calling reports of him quitting the position "inaccurate."
