Dodgers' Roberts apologizes for yelling at D-Backs' Ray during fracas

Tempers flared between division rivals on Friday evening after the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 in extra innings.

Following the final out at Dodger Stadium, D-Backs closer Archie Bradley gestured toward the L.A. dugout, prompting a benches-clearing fracas.

Among those involved was Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who began yelling at Robbie Ray. The left-hander, who started the game, had since changed into a team hoodie and shorts, leading Roberts to confuse him for a team staffer who had taken the field.

After Roberts realized it was an opposing player, he asked A.J. Pollock to reach out to his former teammate on the skipper's behalf.

"Dave wanted to apologize; he sincerely didn't know it was me he was yelling at," Ray told Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic. "I get it. In the heat of the moment, you’ve got 25 guys on each team with a Type A personality not really to take anything from anybody. We’re all competitors."

No punches were thrown in the brouhaha. As for what started the incident, Bradley said he was simply giving the Dodgers, whom he claimed had been yelling from their dugout all game, a taste of their own medicine.

"That's one thing I would say that you could tell all those guys: Nothing is personal," the closer said. "They were cussing at me, throwing shit back. I mean, it’s the game. That’s what makes this so great. Yeah, there are a million games ahead of us. Who cares? It’s about that game, that moment, and that’s what makes this sport great."

The rubber match of the three-game set gets underway Sunday evening, with Hyun-Jin Ryu returning from the injured list to face off against newly acquired Mike Leake.
