Newcomb's meltdown in Braves' clubhouse causes fire extinguisher mishap

Things got weird in the Atlanta Braves' clubhouse after their bullpen blew a four-run lead during an eventual 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Miami Marlins on Saturday.

Braves left-hander Sean Newcomb kicked a garbage can in frustration after being hit with the loss; the can hit a fire extinguisher that popped open and covered the clubhouse, according to Gabriel Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Braves players, coaches, employees, and reporters, as well as the hallways leading into the clubhouse, were covered with powder, Burns adds.

Newcomb was summoned from the 'pen for the 10th inning, allowing a single before committing an error on a pickoff move, and surrendering the walk-off run on Martin Prado's sacrifice fly.

The Braves turned to newly appointed closer Mark Melancon to finish the game off with what appeared to be a comfortable lead heading into the ninth. After striking out Harold Ramirez to begin the inning, the 34-year-old allowed four consecutive singles before former closer and fellow trade-deadline acquisition Shane Greene replaced him.

Greene allowed all of his inherited runners to score, and he eventually ended the inning with the game tied.

"We have to take a step back and look at it as a bad night," Melancon said. "A bad night for me especially. There’s no excuse for that. ... I didn’t pitch well tonight and I deserved to give up some runs."

The Braves traded four players to acquire Melancon and Greene at the trade deadline, hoping to improve a bullpen that's been worth -1.0 WAR this season, according to FanGraphs.

Greene's ERA has soared from 1.38 to 2.14 in five games since being acquired from the Detroit Tigers.

Melancon, who came over from the San Francisco Giants, had held opponents scoreless with the Braves before Saturday's outing.
