Stroman battled nausea, dizziness during win vs. Padres

For Marcus Stroman, the five innings he pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays in Sunday's victory was on adrenaline alone.

Stroman held the San Diego Padres - who had an offensive outburst the day prior by scoring 19 runs - to one run on five hits and one walk, all while battling nausea and dizziness, according to Laura Armstrong of the Toronto Star.

In fact, manager Charlie Montoyo told reporters that Stroman threw up both before and during his start, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.

Following the win, the 28-year-old right-hander donned a Toronto Raptors jersey with Fred VanVleet's name on the back. Less than 24 hours before Stroman was scheduled to take the mound on Saturday night, the Raptors advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history.

That being said, Stroman dispelled any notion that his illness was due to any late night celebrations. The Blue Jays ace, who was in attendance to see the Raptors clinch a Finals berth, said there has been a bug going around the team, according to Armstrong.

Stroman has authored a 2.74 ERA and 3.52 FIP over 12 starts so far this season, but was also a bit disappointed his appointment against Chris Paddack never came to fruition.

Paddack, the young phenom, was scheduled to start Sunday's game in Toronto but was scratched due to neck stiffness. Since making the Opening Day roster as a rookie, the 23-year-old right-hander has posted a 1.93 ERA and 2.75 FIP with an NL-leading 0.76 WHIP.

"I was a little upset," Stroman told Armstrong. "I'm a fan of his, I've been watching his changeup and watching his stuff on film. It's pretty fiery, it's pretty emotional so I was excited to battle him today. Love what he's been doing."
