Mickey Callaway's job as the manager of the New York Mets appears to be safe, at least for now.

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen disclosed on Monday that Callaway has the support of the team's ownership group and front office and will be the club's manager for the "foreseeable future," Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

"Mickey is our manager now," Van Wagenen said. "Mickey is our manager going forward."

Van Wagenen met with the struggling team's coaching staff and roster to make that clear.

"I think Mickey has the respect of the players," added Van Wagenen, according to ESPN. "We believe that Mickey has the pulse of the clubhouse and we believe that the support he has around him will be keys to success."

The announcement comes on the heels of an ugly sweep at the hands of the league-worst Miami Marlins, in which the Mets were shut out in back-to-back games to end the series. The team has now lost five in a row and sits 6 1/2 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for first in the NL East entering Monday's action.

The vote of confidence wasn't the only surprising news on Monday. Callaway revealed that eight-time All-Star Robinson Cano won't be in the lineup against the Washington Nationals, partly because he failed to run out a pair of ground balls against the Marlins, according to Healey. Callaway originally defended Cano for his baserunning gaffes.

Cano acknowledged his mistakes against the Marlins but said Callaway didn't tell him they're the cause of his benching, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.

Despite the decision, Cano said the team's disappointing performance "is not Callaway's fault."
