Cubs to keep Russell in Triple-A when domestic violence suspension ends
Addison Russell will not rejoin the Chicago Cubs immediately once his 40-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy ends Friday.
Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein announced Tuesday that Russell will remain in Triple-A Iowa where he will split time between shortstop and second base until they believe he's ready to rejoin the club, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.
Russell, who was suspended in October, hasn't played in the majors since Sept. 19 but has appeared in six games with Iowa where he's slashed .250/.423/.500 with one home run and seven RBIs.
The 25-year-old has played exclusively at shortstop over the last four seasons, but likely has lost his starting job to Javier Baez. He did appear in 86 games at second base in 2015. The Cubs have used Ben Zobrist, Daniel Descalso, and David Bote at second base this season.
