The Chicago White Sox designated veteran right-hander Ervin Santana for assignment to make room for Eloy Jimenez's return from the bereavement list, the team announced Friday.

Santana signed a minor-league deal with Chicago in February and went 0-2 with a 9.45 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP in three starts.

The 36-year-old starter was limited to five starts with the Minnesota Twins in 2018 due to a lingering finger injury following preseason surgery.

He's not far removed from being an effective hurler, however, as he went 16-8 with a 3.28 ERA in 211 1/3 innings over 33 starts during 2017.

Jimenez missed the team's last three games while on the bereavement list. For the season, the rookie is hitting .231/.286/.372 with three home runs in 20 games.
