The New York Yankees released left-hander Gio Gonzalez from his minor-league contract on Monday, the team announced, making the two-time All-Star a free agent.

Under the terms of his deal, Gonzalez requested the release after not being added to the Yankees' 25-man roster by April 20.

The Milwaukee Brewers are interested in bringing Gonzalez back, a source told Andy Martino of SNY, while the New York Mets are also reportedly showing more interest in the 33-year-old than they did during the offseason. The Mets have already inquired about signing Gonzalez, a source told Yahoo Sports' Matt Ehalt.

New York is more likely to sign Gonzalez than fellow free-agent starter Dallas Keuchel, according to Martino.

Gonzalez went 10-11 with a 4.21 ERA and 148 strikeouts across 171 innings in 2018 while splitting time between the Brewers and Washington Nationals. The year before, he finished sixth in National League Cy Young Award voting.

In Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, Gonzalez accrued a 6.00 ERA across 15 innings with 19 strikeouts and six walks.

He's now hitting the open market with new representation after reportedly leaving agent Scott Boras in favor of CAA.
