Altuve's homer streak snapped at 5 games

Jose Altuve's ridiculous power surge came to an end on Sunday when the Houston Astros star failed to go deep for the first time in a week.

The 2017 AL MVP tied a major-league record for second basemen when he went deep for the fifth straight game on Saturday against the Seattle Mariners. It was only the ninth time a second baseman hit home runs in five consecutive contests since at least 1908, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com.

No second baseman has gone yard in six straight in that time.

Despite failing to extend his streak, Altuve did register a base hit for the seventh consecutive game in the 3-2 victory. After going 1-for-4 on the day, Altuve is hitting .328/.371/.688 with seven home runs, 13 RBIs, and 12 runs scored through 16 contests.

The 28-year-old was never expected to morph into a power threat. When he won his first batting title in 2014, he batted .341 and hit only seven home runs in 158 games. From 2015 through 2018, though, he averaged 19 homers per year, topping out with 24 in back-to-back years in 2016 and 2017.
