Betances to start season on IL due to shoulder injury

New York Yankees reliever Dellin Betances will start the season on the injured list because of a right shoulder impingement, general manager Brian Cashman disclosed Tuesday, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

Cashman added that there's no expected time frame for the pitcher's recovery, but that it shouldn't be a long process and will likely keep Betances off the mound for a week. He will be treated with anti-inflammatory medicine.

The 30-year-old right-hander said he won't throw for three-to-five days. He believes he had trouble getting extended because he did not complete his full offseason program.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone apparently isn't too worried about Betances' health.

"We’ll miss him, but we also feel like this is something we’ll be able to correct and shouldn't take too long," Boone said.

Betances accrued a 4-6 record with a 2.70 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings for the Yankees during 2018.

New York has dealt with a rash of injuries this spring already, as ace right-hander Luis Severino and left-hander CC Sabathia will both also start the season on the IL. In addition, starting center fielder Aaron Hicks is dealing with chronic back pain and has already received multiple cortisone shots.
