The Bryce Harper sweepstakes continue taking baby steps and a favorite is slowly emerging.

Philadelphia Phillies owner John Middleton reportedly traveled to Las Vegas, Harper's hometown, to meet with the free agent outfielder on Friday, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN. No deal is anticipated right away unless something unexpected happens.

The Phillies have long been seen as the front-runner to sign the six-time All-Star and are apparently confident they'll be able to land the 2015 NL MVP.

While Philadelphia may be the favorite to sign Harper, other suitors remain. The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres are still involved, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. He also lists the Washington Nationals, but owner Mark Lerner said Friday the club has moved on.

The Chicago White Sox aren't aggressively involved when it comes to Harper even after missing out on Manny Machado, Heyman adds.

The 26-year-old Harper, expected to sign a massive contract, has also reportedly turned down multiple deals worth in excess of $300 million in recent weeks.
