Yankees' Sanchez to undergo shoulder surgery, expected back for Opening Day
New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez will undergo surgery on his left shoulder, general manager Brian Cashman told reporters on Wednesday, via Brendan Kuty of NJ.com.
The procedure, which is called a left shoulder debridement, will attempt to fix a shoulder issue Cashman says has been bothering Sanchez since the 2017 season, according to The Athletic's Lindsey Adler.
Sanchez is expected to be ready for Opening Day next season. If his rehab takes longer, Cashman said he's comfortable going into 2019 with Austin Romine as the team's primary catcher, via Andy Martino of SNY.
Sanchez was an All-Star and Silver Slugger winner in 2017, but he slumped badly in 2018, hitting just .186/.291/.406 with 18 home runs, 17 doubles, and 53 RBIs in 374 plate appearances. He was also on the disabled list two times because of a recurring groin injury.
