The Oakland Athletics are reportedly one of the teams interested in acquiring New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Additionally, Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports reports that the Chicago Cubs are also looking at the 28-year-old.

The Mets did not use Familia in a save situation on Friday against the New York Yankees. According to ESPN's Buster Olney, they are reportedly working to complete a trade.

Familia has spent his last few seasons pitching in the ninth inning for the Mets, but Oakland already employs an All-Star stopper in Blake Treinen. The A's are apparently eyeing him as additional set-up depth behind Treinen, where he could possibly share eighth-inning duties with Lou Trivino as part of a bolstered back end, Slusser reports.

A six-week surge heading into the All-Star break left the Athletics only three games back of the Seattle Mariners for the second AL wild-card spot entering play Friday. The A's haven't made the playoffs since 2014, and while their success has been somewhat of a surprise in a rebuilding year, team president Billy Beane has already indicated that they plan to capitalize on their run by buying ahead of the deadline.

The Cubs, meanwhile, could use additional bullpen help with closer Brandon Morrow once again on the disabled list. They have already made one move, adding reliever Jesse Chavez on Thursday night.

It was reported earlier Friday that New York has discussed Familia with seven-to-eight teams in the hopes of moving him before the July 31 deadline. Besides the A's and Cubs, it's not clear what other teams are in pursuit of him.

Familia has been one of the Mets' few bright spots during an otherwise dismal season. He's saved 17 games while posting a 2.88 ERA with 43 strikeouts over 40 2/3 innings pitched. He's earning $7.925 million this season, per Cot's Contracts, and is scheduled to become a free agent this winter.
