Dodgers GM: Manny will play both 3B and SS going forward

Now that Manny Machado's officially a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, he'll have to fall in line with how his new team operates.

Hours after acquiring the All-Star from the Baltimore Orioles for a package of five prospects, Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi announced that Machado will be playing both third base and shortstop for the rest of the season, despite his wishes to remain at shortstop long term.

"I think even Manny is going to play some short and some third when the situation calls for it," Zaidi said, according to Dodgers Insider. "He's going to move around a little bit like the rest of our guys do."

The GM added that manager Dave Roberts has already discussed these defensive plans with Machado, and per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register said that "Everybody is on the same page."

Until his position switch this season, Machado was one of the finest third basemen in baseball. He won two Gold Gloves at the hot corner, as well as the 2013 Platinum Glove award that's given to baseball's best overall defensive player, regardless of position.

But the 26-year-old has since moved back to shortstop, his natural position on the diamond, and has repeatedly insisted that he'll be entering free agency this winter as a shortstop only.

Machado is likely to see more time at shortstop given Corey Seager's long-term injury and Justin Turner's presence at third. He may also provide Turner with periodic rest days at the hot corner if need be.

Los Angeles puts a great emphasis on defensive flexibility and employs several players who are capable of playing multiple positions, including breakout star Max Muncy and super-utility players Chris Taylor and Enrique Hernandez. Taylor has played a lot of shortstop since Seager went down, but with Machado now in the fold, Zaidi said he'll bounce around between short, second base, and even some corner outfield.
