Bob Costas named 2018 Ford Frick Award winner
One of the national pastime's most iconic voices is headed to Cooperstown.
Longtime baseball broadcaster Bob Costas was announced by the Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday as the recipient of the 2018 Ford Frick Award for broadcasting excellence. The 28-time Emmy winner will accept his latest honor during this summer's Hall of Fame weekend on July 28.
"For almost 40 years, Bob Costas has presented an incredibly thoughtful and informed voice on every game he calls for NBC, The Baseball Network, and MLB Network," Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson said in a statement. "But it's Bob's pure affection for baseball that has made him a national treasure. From the first day he entered our living rooms, Bob became one of the National Pastime's greatest friends."
Costas began his baseball play-by-play career in 1982 with NBC, and formed one half of an iconic national broadcast crew in the 1980s with fellow Frick winner Tony Kubek. The 65-year-old has been the voice of three World Series, eight League Championship Series, and a pair of All-Star Games. He's also provided pregame coverage for many significant baseball events. Costas continues to call regular-season and postseason games on MLB Network, in addition to voicing and hosting other programming for the baseball station.
Perhaps his most memorable moment as a play-by-play man came in 1997, when he called Edgar Renteria's World Series-winning single that ended one of the more memorable Game 7s in World Series history.
Other finalists for this year's Frick Award included Joe Buck, Al Michaels, Dizzy Dean, and Don Drysdale.
