Report: Mets considering pursuit of Ohtani

Yet another MLB club is eyeing a run at Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani: the New York Mets.

The Mets are considering a pursuit of the two-way player once he's posted by the Nippon Ham Fighters, sources told Newsday's Marc Carig and David Lennon.

Due to new posting rules, Ohtani is expected to sign a minor-league deal, which will keep his contract affordable. One thing that could limit the Mets' chances, however, is their relative lack international signing pool money that can be used as a signing bonus. The Mets have only $105,000 available, according to Ronald Blum of the Associated Press.

They would need to pursue trades to rebuild the bonus pool.

The Mets' interest isn't surprising, as half of baseball had representatives scouting the pitcher-slugger hybrid in August. The Mets weren't among those listed at the time, but have reportedly scouted Ohtani.
