Report: Jeter told Marlins president to fire Dawson, McKeon, other execs

The Miami Marlins are going to be cleaning house of plenty of familiar faces, and it appears to be at the behest of future owner Derek Jeter.

Jeter has reportedly asked current Marlins president David Samson to fire Jeff Conine, Andre Dawson, Tony Perez, and Jack McKeon from their posts as special assistants to team executives, according to the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson and Clark Spencer.

The request came down the pipeline after Samson himself was informed that he wouldn't be returning to the team.

Team owners still haven't voted on the pending sale - scheduled for the first week of October - but Jeter apparently called Samson to take care of the firings on Wednesday because he didn't want to do it personally.

McKeon, who managed the team to a World Series title in 2003, has worked in a variety of roles for the front office and isn't exactly pleased with the decision, though he says he's taking it in stride.

"Sure I'm sad," McKeon said. "No question you're sad. I'm disappointed, but you understand. A new regime is coming in and they want their new people in there. You can’t fault them with that."

Both Dawson and Perez are Hall of Famers and have been linked to the franchise for many years. Dawson finished his playing career there, and Perez has worked in multiple positions since the team's inaugural season in 1993.

But, neither Perez or Dawson have been given the nickname 'Mr. Marlin.' That moniker belongs to Conine, who played parts of eight seasons with the team, including being part of both World Series rosters.
