Miller leaves game after re-aggravating right knee injury

Cleveland Indians All-Star reliever Andrew Miller exited Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox accompanied by the Indians' training staff after throwing just seven pitches to begin the seventh inning.

The Indians announced later that Miller left the game having re-aggravated the patella tendinitis in his right knee - the same issue that forced him to the disabled list for over two weeks earlier this month.

Miller walked Mookie Betts on six pitches to open the seventh inning. He then threw a ball to Andrew Benintendi and immediately signaled to the dugout while looking to be in some kind of pain. After a brief discussion with manager Terry Francona, catcher Roberto Perez, and training staff while situated along the third-base line, he left the game and went straight to the clubhouse.

He was replaced on the mound by right-hander Dan Otero.

All of Miller's seven pitches thrown after entering the game in the seventh were fastballs, well below his average velocity.

"I wasn't doing us any favors (by staying in the game)," Miller said postgame, according to ESPN's Scott Lauber. "I hope it's not something that holds me back. Hopefully it's just a blip in the whole scheme of things."

Miller will be reevaluated by the Indians on Tuesday, per Lauber.

This was only Miller's second outing since being activated from the DL on Friday, having missed the first two weeks of August thanks to the patella tendinitis. Miller threw two-thirds of an inning in Kansas City on Aug. 18, and recorded one strikeout on 14 pitches during that outing.

The 32-year-old Miller entered Monday's game sporting a 1.65 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, and 79 strikeouts to 16 walks in 54 2/3 innings pitched for the American League Central-leading Indians this season.
