Marlins trade Phelps to Mariners for 4 prospects

Steve Mitchell / USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Marlins traded right-handed reliever David Phelps to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday in exchange for outfielder Brayan Hernandez and right-handed pitching prospects Brandon Miller, Pablo Lopez, and Lukas Schiraldi.

Phelps was among a number of relievers the Marlins have been shopping heading into the deadline. He's spent the last three years in Miami, and posted a 3.45 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 51 strikeouts in 47 innings this season while working primarily in the seventh and eighth innings.

The 30-year-old is arbitration eligible for a fourth time this winter and hits free agency after next season. The Mariners are expected to take on the remaining $2 million of Phelps' deal owed this season.

Hernandez, the No. 6-ranked prospect in the Mariners' system, hit .252/.306/.408 with two home runs in 28 games in short-season Class-A Everett.

Miller (Seattle's No. 16 prospect) is 9-4 with a 3.65 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 94 strikeouts in 101 innings with Class-A Clinton.

Lopez (No. 22) is 5-8 with a 5.04 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 89 strikeouts in 100 innings with Class-A Advanced Modesto.

Schiraldi, the son of former major leaguer Calvin Schiraldi, is 2-1 with a 4.58 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, and 63 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings with Modesto.
