8 highlights from Big Papi's number retirement ceremony

No. 34 will forever hang inside Fenway Park after the Boston Red Sox officially retired the number of David Ortiz in a pregame ceremony on Friday.

During the monumental presentation to retire the number of a Boston sports legend, a series of precious moments took place, which Big Papi will presumably remember for the rest of his life.

Here are eight of the best moments from Papi's memorable night.

Dapper Ortiz

A big night calls for the right attire, and Ortiz certainly didn't disappoint when he marched out of the home dugout at Fenway Park.

Papi was looking sharp in a finely fitted grey suit, which was accompanied by a sleek silver bow tie and his customary sunglasses.

Remembering Kirby

Upon arriving in Boston, Ortiz chose to wear the No. 34 to honor former Minnesota Twins great Kirby Puckett, who was a 10-time All-Star and six-time Gold Glove winner during his 12 seasons in the Twin Cities.

In a beautiful gesture, the Red Sox invited the family of Puckett, who died in 2006 after suffering a stroke, to the field to help Ortiz celebrate the retirement of the number.

Pedro Martinez

What would a ceremony honoring Ortiz be without his good pal Pedro Martinez? The Hall of Famer was in attendance Friday and after having some difficulties with his cell phone, had some touching words for his Dominican compatriot.

Martinez was partly responsible for Ortiz signing with Boston after a chance encounter in a Dominican restaurant in 2002.

'Peewee' Pedroia

One night after Pedroia was part of a Big Papi roast, the diminutive second baseman took hold of the mic once again Friday. But, instead of making a mockery out of Ortiz, Pedroia had nothing but sentimental words to deliver, thanking his former teammate for being a loving part of the Red Sox "family."

Papi hugs his Papi

The OG Papi, Leo Ortiz, was in attendance Friday to celebrate the retirement of his son's No. 34 and, in a special moment between father and son, graced the younger Papi with a massive bear hug, which received a roaring ovation from the Fenway faithful in attendance.

Waterworks open

It was bound to happen.

After Pedroia's touching words and before thanking every one of his Red Sox teammates, the organization as a whole, his family, and the city of Boston, Ortiz stopped for a moment to shed tears of joy.

After drying his eyes, Papi delivered a resounding speech, which ended with four perfectly touching words, "I love you, Boston."

The number reveal

The moment everyone was waiting for.

The No. 34 was officially unveiled by the Red Sox and placed among the pantheon of legends at Fenway Park, including organizational greats such as Wade Boggs, Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr, Carlton Fisk, Pedro Martinez, Johnny Pesky, Jim Rice, Ted Williams, and Carl Yastrzemski.

He didn't pitch for a reason

Well, it can't all be perfect, can it?

After the ceremony concluded, Ortiz was asked to throw out the first pitch before the Red Sox hosted the Los Angeles Angels.

With former teammate Tim Wakefield by his side and ex-team captain Jason Varitek behind the dish, Papi delivered a pitch just a bit outside before shaking off his retired arm and laughing off his poor effort.
