Mets' Cabrera eager for trade after move to 2B

In his one-and-a-half seasons with the New York Mets, Asdrubal Cabrera has never played a position other than shortstop, so the 31-year-old - out since June 12 with a thumb injury - was not at all pleased to learn that he will start at second base Friday in his first game back from the disabled list

So irked was Cabrera, who hasn't played second base since 2014, with the position change, he said ahead of his club's series opener against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park that he wants to be traded.

"Personally, I'm not really happy with that move," Cabrera told reporters, including MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. "If they have that plan, they should've told me before coming over here."

He added: "I think it's time to make a move."

Jose Reyes, the four-time All-Star who has split time between third base and shortstop this year, got the start at shortstop Friday.

Cabrera, who owns a .713 OPS with six homers in 49 games in 2017, added that the Mets' refusal to guarantee his $8.5-million option for next season also fueled his desire for a trade.

"They are thinking about them, but I have to think about my family too," he said.

Though the Mets, 31-41, look increasingly unlikely to unload as the trade deadline nears, general manager Sandy Alderson noted after meeting with his frustrated infielder and manager Terry Collins that Cabrera may not even really want a trade.

"As a practical matter, that's easier said than done," Alderson said. "Even if I were so inclined, I don't know that that's something that he really wishes. I think that was part of his conversation with you and probably a natural part of it, as I said, it's not really a question of satisfying him or not, it's a practical matter. We'll see what develops with all our players."
