Tigers' Ausmus: 'We're playing like crap'

Rick Osentoski / USA TODAY Sports

Brad Ausmus is being brutally honest about the recent play of the Detroit Tigers.

In just under four innings Wednesday, the Tigers went from a 4-0 lead with Justin Verlander's perfect game intact to eventually losing 7-5 to the Seattle Mariners. That quick shift in fortune was apparently the last straw for the Tigers skipper who rallied his players postgame to figure out what they're doing wrong and to right the ship soon.

"We're playing like crap, overall. We're losing games. There's not much to say. We've got to snap out of it somehow," Ausmus told MLive's Evan Woodberry. "I don't know if it's the chicken or the egg, but something's got to happen to turn the tide and we've got to do it pretty quick."

Ausmus didn't immediately put forth any suggestions to fix the Tigers' sad state of affairs - Wednesday's loss was their fifth consecutive defeat - though he did put the onus on the players to fix the issue.

"The manager can't do much. The players play the game," he told Woodberry. "You've got to stay positive, support them, obviously give them instruction whenever possible. The main thing is to keep grinding and working hard."
