Cespedes injures quad during rehab assignment

New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes experienced a setback during his minor-league rehab assignment and will be out of action until at least Tuesday because of right quad soreness, the team announced, according to the New York Post's Mike Puma.

Cespedes, who was rehabbing a hamstring injury, began his assignment Friday and played six innings with High-A St. Lucie. He went 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

He apparently felt the soreness in his quad while running the bases during Friday's contest.

Cespedes was expected to rehab over the weekend and possibly join the Mets Monday in New York, but the timeline for his return has obviously changed.

The 31-year-old slugger, who was re-signed by the Mets to a four-year, $110-million contract during the offseason, has appeared in just 18 games this season, hitting .270/.373/.619 with six home runs and 10 RBIs.

Cespedes is just one of many Mets to miss action this season, as several key players, including Noah Syndergaard, Jeurys Familia, Steven Matz, and David Wright, have been bitten by the injury bug.
