An inquiry by Barcelona into the potential availability of Eric Garcia was immediately rebuffed during recent talks with Manchester City, sources told ESPN's Sam Marsden and Moises Llorens.

Although City apparently want to sign a new center-back this summer, Garcia is seen as part of the club's first-team plans and is highly regarded by manager Pep Guardiola. The 19-year-old Spaniard has made 11 appearances in all competitions this season.

Barcelona reportedly asked about Garcia during conversations over a swap deal involving right-backs Nelson Semedo and Joao Cancelo, the latter of whom has suffered from inconsistency during his first season with City.

The Catalonian club was apparently encouraged to investigate Garcia's situation due to uncertainty over Guardiola's long-term future and City's looming two-year European ban, which could unsettle many members of their squad.

Garcia has only two years left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium, giving him a strong negotiating position when it comes to deciding whether his future lies at City or elsewhere. He was previously on Barcelona's books before City lured him away in 2017 - reportedly with the help of former Barca captain Carles Puyol.

Garcia's knowledge of Barca's playing philosophy and his quality in possession have led the club to view him as a "good fit" for its senior ranks, souces told Marsden and Llorens. Barcelona missed out on signing Mattijs de Ligt last summer and are seeking a long-term replacement for 33-year-old Gerard Pique.

Even if nothing materializes this summer, Barcelona will reportedly continue to monitor Garcia as he enters the penultimate season of his Manchester City contract.
