Seven teams booked their tickets to the Champions League knockout stage on Tuesday.

Marouane Fellaini's 91st-minute winner against Young Boys secured Manchester United's passage to the next round, while Manchester City needed only a draw to join their crosstown rivals in the last 16.

Bayern Munich and Juventus each advanced with wins over Benfica and Valencia, respectively.

Ajax, Real Madrid, and Roma also confirmed their places after favorable results from Tuesday's early kickoffs.

Fellaini converted one of United's four shots on target to relieve the pressure on manager Jose Mourinho, who hurled a crate of water bottles in reaction to the goal.

Meanwhile, City withstood a tough test at Lyon to reserve a place in the business end of the tournament. The visitors matched the hosts blow for blow in a pulsating match that ended 2-2.

City talisman Sergio Aguero scored the late equalizer, but it wasn't enough to clinch Pep Guardiola's side first place in Group E.

Lyon would've joined the elite if not for Shakhtar Donetsk's late victory over Hoffenheim. Just two points behind Lyon in Group F, Shakhtar will progress with a win over the French side in the final matchday of the group stage.

In Germany, much-maligned Bayern throttled Benfica despite a growing list of injuries. Arjen Robben and Robert Lewandowski each scored twice and Franck Ribery added another in a lopsided 5-1 victory that should buy under-fire manager Niko Kovac some time.

The job wasn't so straightforward for Juventus, who needed Wojciech Szczesny to parry away Mouctar Diakhaby's header to keep the match scoreless in the first half. Mario Mandzukic tapped in the game's only goal in the 59th minute.

In the earlier kickoffs, Dusan Tadic scored twice against AEK Athens as Ajax sealed their first trip to the knockout round in 13 years, and Viktoria Plzen's comeback win over CSKA Moscow sent Group G rivals Madrid and Roma to the next stage.

Madrid proceeded to win the group with a routine 2-0 win over an error-prone and sluggish Roma side.
