Mourinho's back: Roma sign ex-Spurs manager to 3-year contract
Jose Mourinho is back.
The Portuguese manager, who was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur in late April, will return to the touchline next season after being introduced as the new manager of AS Roma, the Serie A club announced Tuesday.
Mourinho agreed to a three-year contract and will officially take charge ahead of the 2021-22 campaign.
"After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma," Mourinho said.
"It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.
"The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season."
Mourinho was in charge of Tottenham for 17 months before being relieved of his duties on April 19.
His dismissal was confirmed six days before he had a chance to help the club win its first trophy since 2008 in the League Cup final. Spurs went on to lose the match against Manchester City with interim manager Ryan Mason on the touchline.
Mourinho will replace Paulo Fonseca, who will leave at the end of the season after two years in charge.
Roma currently sit seventh in Serie A with four games left in the season.
The Italian club is coming off a 6-2 defeat in the first leg of its Europa League semifinal meeting against Mourinho's former side, Manchester United.
The 58-year-old returns to Italy where he enjoyed a successful two years as manager of Inter Milan. Mourinho led the Nerazzurri to two Scudettos and a Champions League triumph in 2010.
He also previously coached Chelsea, Real Madrid, and FC Porto.
