Embattled striker Mauro Icardi has been sent home from Inter's preseason training camp in Switzerland, casting further doubt over his future in Milan.

Inter revealed Icardi's status on Saturday, stating: "The club and the striker have come to this decision by mutual agreement."

The Serie A side is in Lugano, Switzerland ahead of a scheduled tour of Asia, and according to Inter's statement, Icardi will not participate in those preseason preparations either. "Icardi will continue his preseason training over the next few days and will take no part in our Summer Tour in Asia."

News of Icardi's return to Italy comes days after club CEO Giuseppe Marotta told Sky Sport Italia that the Argentine and midfielder Radja Nainggolan have no future in Milan.

"They are not part of our project. I say this with transparency and respect," Marotta admitted.

Inter have been strongly linked with Manchester United's Romelu Lukaku, with the latest update suggesting that the Red Devils have rejected a €70-million approach for the towering Belgian striker.

Icardi, capocannoniere in 2017-18, was stripped of the captain's armband last season following comments made on television by his agent and wife Wanda Nara. Icardi then refused to play in a Europa League fixture against Rapid Wien and missed a month with an alleged knee injury amid a contract dispute, an ailment that the club said a compulsory scan did not detect.
