Milan banned from European football for 1 year for violating FFP rules

AC Milan will not take part in the Europa League next season after striking a deal with UEFA to serve a one-year ban from European football for violating Financial Fair Play rules, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced.

The CAS ruled in UEFA's favor that Milan have violated FFP rules over the last three years by overspending on new recruits.

"AC Milan is excluded from participating in the UEFA Club Competitions of the sporting season 2019-2020 as a consequence of the breach of its FFP break-even obligations during the 2015/2016/2017 and the 2016/2017/2018 monitoring periods," a statement from the CAS read.

Last summer, Milan were successful in their appeal against a two-year European ban issued by UEFA after the club was found guilty of breaching FFP rules from 2015 to 2017. The club competed in the Europa League before its case was referred to UEFA's financial watchdog again last April.

Milan then negotiated a deal to reduce their suspension from European competition from two years to one.

As a result of Milan's exclusion from the Europa League next season, AS Roma - who finished sixth in Serie A - will now compete in the competition while their place in the qualifying rounds will go to seventh-placed Torino.
