Hamilton wins 7th Canadian GP after Vettel's controversial penalty

Ferrari finally crossed the finish line first this season, and it still wasn't enough.

Sebastian Vettel controlled Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix, but a controversial five-second time penalty for re-entering the track unsafely saw Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton secure the win after he finished just behind the German at the checkered flag.

Hamilton equals Michael Schumacher's record by grabbing his seventh career victory at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, and in the process extends his lead over teammate Valtteri Bottas atop the drivers' championship to 29 points.

"That's absolutely not the way I want to win," Hamilton said after the race. "I forced the error and he went wide ... we nearly collided, but that's motor racing."

Vettel missed a turn on lap 48, and while coming off the grass and returning to the track, was adjudged to have blocked off Hamilton in an unsafe manner. The four-time world champion was incensed with the decision.

"Where am I meant to go?" Vettel barked on the team radio after he was informed of the penalty during the race.

He made his biggest statement afterward, though, when he swapped the first- and second-place finishing markers after parking his SF90.

It will come as little consolation to Ferrari in the wake of Vettel's fury, but the Italian team did manage to claim two spots on the podium in Montreal, as Charles Leclerc finished third.
