Scola leads Argentina's 12-man World Cup squad
Big man Luis Scola will lead Argentina's 12-man squad for the upcoming FIBA World Cup, the country's governing body for basketball announced Friday.
The 39-year-old is one of the lone remaining active players from the fifth-ranked nation's "golden generation" of basketball, a group that includes Manu Ginobili, Andres Nocioni, and Carlos Delfino.
Scola has been a mainstay on the Argentinian team since 1999 and was his country's flag bearer at the 2016 Olympics. He helped the South American nation win gold at the 2004 Athens Games and silver at the 2002 World Cup.
Scola continues to be a force in international play and averaged 16.7 points and 8.1 boards per contest during World Cup qualifying. The pairing of Patricio Garino and Facundo Campazzo is expected to complement the 10-year NBA vet.
Argentina finished 11th at the last World Cup and returns five members from that squad. The team opens play against Korea on Aug. 31, then faces Nigeria on Sept. 2 and Russia on Sept. 4.
