Sevilla announced former Spain and Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui as their new manager Tuesday. The two sides reached a three-season agreement.

Lopetegui, who will replace Joaquin Caparros on the bench, was dismissed by Spain on the eve of the 2018 World Cup after reaching an agreement to coach Madrid.

But the privilege of serving his childhood club ended in disaster. Los Blancos fired Lopetegui after just 10 La Liga matches, including a 5-1 defeat to Barcelona that left them in ninth place.

Sporting director Monchi, who returned to Sevilla after a disappointing spell as Roma's recruitment chief, made Lopetegui his first order of business. Sevilla needed a replacement after Caparros revealed in April he was battling chronic leukaemia.

Sevilla finished in sixth place in La Liga last season, just enough to clinch a Europa League spot for the 2019-20 campaign.
