Arsenal announced Wednesday that rising young star Bukayo Saka has signed a new long-term contract to remain at the club.

The versatile 18-year-old, one of the lone bright spots for the Gunners this season, was due to become a free agent next summer. Securing Saka's services for the foreseeable future has been a priority for Arsenal since the academy product broke into the first team last season, and only became more imperative as he continued to develop into a standout performer this year.

Saka's made 34 appearances for the north London outfit since his debut and has recorded 11 assists in all competitions this season despite often playing out of position at left-back.

"Bukayo is a talented and intelligent young player," manager Mikel Arteta said. "He has impressed me with his work ethic and attitude to learn and adapt, and it has paid off in his performances. I am excited to continue working with him to develop him further and for him to help us achieve our goals."

"This is something everyone involved wanted to happen and we are delighted that Bukayo has signed a new long-term contract," technical director Edu Gaspar added. "He's making great progress and is one of a number of young players who have developed through our academy. This is so important for us as we move forward as a club."

Various teams were reportedly keeping a close eye on Saka's contract situation, hoping Arsenal and the teenage star would be unable to agree to terms on a new deal.

In the end, though, the move ensures that Arsenal have retained a vital building block as they continue to rebuild their squad and try to regain their status as title contenders.
