Spurs storm back to clinch UCL knockout berth, City stumble into last 16

Facing a 2-0 deficit against Olympiacos after just 19 minutes of play, Tottenham scored four unanswered goals for an epic 4-2 win on Jose Mourinho's home debut Tuesday to book a spot in the Champions League knockout round.

Manchester City advanced to the last 16 in far less dramatic fashion; thanks to Atalanta's victory over Dinamo Zagreb, City's 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk was enough to secure top spot in Group C.

Youssef El-Arabi's curling effort and Ruben Semedo's scrappy finish threatened to burst Mourinho's buoyant mood early. But the usually conservative manager proved he's a new man, replacing defensive midfielder Eric Dier with playmaker Christian Eriksen in a bid to take the initiative and reclaim the night.

His team delivered. Dele Alli set the comeback in motion with a tap-in just before halftime. Minutes after the interval, Harry Kane slotted home off a quick throw-in from Serge Aurier. Recognizing the ball boy's efforts to keep the play going, Mourinho ran over and gave him a hug.

Aurier scored a goal of his own in the 73rd minute, connecting sweetly with Alli's cross, and Kane doubled his tally in the 77th with a glancing header from Eriksen's free-kick.

Spurs have now scored seven goals in two matches under Mourinho, a rapid change of fortune since Mauricio Pochettino was ousted as manager.

In a peculiar 90 minutes, City struggled to create chances at the Etihad. Guardiola made five changes to his starting lineup and started Gabriel Jesus in place of the injured Sergio Aguero. They had to wait until the 25th minute to get their first shot on target.

Ilkay Gundogan slipped in the go-ahead goal midway through the second half, but City were eventually made to pay for their defensive frailties when Shakhtar's Manor Solomon fired from close range on 69 minutes.

Shakhtar can still reach the next round with a win over Atalanta on Matchday 6.
