West Ham have opened an investigation after a video surfaced Monday of a fan appearing to yell Islamophobic abuse at Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, a spokesperson for the London club told The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg.
In the video, an unspecified individual can be heard yelling insults at Salah as the Egyptian winger is preparing to deliver a corner at London Stadium.
In response, West Ham have promised lifetime bans for anyone identified in the footage.
"At West Ham United, we have a zero tolerance policy to any form of violent or abusive behavior," a spokesperson said. "We are an inclusive football club. Regardless of age, race, religion or belief, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment or disability, everyone is warmly welcomed at London Stadium.
"Anyone identified committing an offence will have their details passed to the police and will face a lifetime ban from London Stadium. There is no place for this kind of behavior at our stadium."
London's Metropolitan Police also issued their own statement confirming their own investigation.
"Officers are in the process of reviewing the footage. No arrests have been made and inquiries continue," they said, according to Steinberg.
"Anyone who witnesses inappropriate behavior during a match is urged to bring it to the attention of a steward or police officer."
