Matt Fitzpatrick shot a final-round 2-under 68 on Sunday to win the U.S. Open by one stroke over Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris at The Country Club.

Fitzpatrick joins Jack Nicklaus as the only other player to win both the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open on the same course.

PLACE PLAYER ROUND 4 SCORE TOTAL TO PAR

T7 Denny McCarthy 68 -1

T10 Joel Dahmen 71 E

The win also marks Fitzpatrick's first on the PGA TOUR after posting seven career victories on the DP World Tour.

Fitzpatrick shot rounds of 68, 70, 68, and 68 en route to his win on Sunday, finishing as the only player without an over-par round on the week. His day was highlighted by a 48-foot putt for birdie at the par-4 13th, and another long birdie putt at the par-4 15th.

After his drive landed in the fairway bunker on the 18th hole, Fitzpatrick was still able to land his next shot on the green with a brilliant 9-iron, going on to make par and finish the tournament at 6-under.

"It's just absolutely unbelievable," Fitzpatrick told Sky Sports Golf following his win. "It is 10 million times better than I thought it would feel and for everything that I feel like I've put in - the hard work over the years - to see it pay off like that, it's special."

This is Zalatoris' second runner-up finish at a major this season and the third of his career. Last month, the 25-year-old lost to Justin Thomas in a playoff at the PGA Championship. Despite his dominant showings at majors, Zalatoris is still searching for his first win on TOUR.

Rory McIlroy, who hasn't won a major since 2014, entered the final round three strokes back at 1-under and immediately made a statement with a birdie at the first. He had a roller coaster front nine making two more birdies and three bogeys to make the turn at even for his round.

Back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14 and 15 got the 33-year-old to 2-under for the tournament, good enough for a tie for fifth with Collin Morikawa.

McIlroy stayed at the 18th green to congratulate Fitzpatrick, whom he was Ryder Cup teammates with in both 2016 and 2020.

"All that work pays off," he told Fitzpatrick, per the PGA TOUR. "I'm so happy for you."

Fitzpatrick led the field in strokes gained: around-the-green this week at The Country Club, according to the TOUR. That performance helped him become just the second Englishman to win the U.S. Open in the past 50 years.

Billy Foster, Fitzpatrick's caddie, was on the bag for a major win for the first time in his 40-year career, according to Golf.com.
